KVHAdventuring Eco-History Mystery Timeline 1854 Settlement accelerates after Kansas Territory is established. 1862 Passage of the Homestead Act draws thousands of immigrants west after the start of the Civil War. 1867 A peace treaty between United States and several Plains tribes is signed at medicine Lodge. 1869 Swedish immigrants found Lindsborg 1872 A wave of immigration to America begins with Germans living in Russia. 1874 The first Czechoslovakian homesteader comes to Wilson. Thousands follow. 1876 Volga Germans begin settling in and near Hays and introduce winter wheat. 1877 Former slaves found Nicodemus. 1892 Many Kansas immigrants begin their American journey at the new Ellis Island Immigration Station in New York.
