The De Soto girls basketball team was able Friday to escape its immediate past - it put to bed the horrid taste of last week’s 17-point performance against Eudora but putting up more than 40 against Gardner Edgerton.

It didn’t seem it could get much worse Tuesday for the De Soto girls basketball team. The Cats game against Kansas Highway 10 rival Eudora was long since over, though nearly three minutes remained in the eventual 50-17 loss, the team’s most listless performance in an already long and rough season.

There was a moment Saturday during the De Soto-hosted Frontier League wrestling tournament when it was again apparent that the Wildcats wrestling program could be in the midst of a major revival.

The tangible proof came Tuesday. De Soto beat Eudora for the second time this season, this time protecting its home floor, maintaining a buzzer-to-buzzer lead to hold off the Cardinals, 57-48.

The scores weren’t pretty - De Soto lost duals Jan. 31 to Eudora 57-12, and to Anderson County 64-18. Still, Wildcat coach Shannon Sawner said in the wins De Soto was able to collect and in his team’s performances in losses, he saw progress.

I didn’t take it well when Kansas State lost to Kansas in football during the fall, little better than I did early in my undergraduate career or in my childhood when such clashes seemed to carry even more weight.
