Three DHS seniors named National Merit semifinalists

Three seniors from De Soto High School, Parker Riley, Austin Showen and Philip Kaul, have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program.

The representatives from De Soto join approximately 16,000 other high school seniors from across the country in the competition, all selected from the pool of more than one million students who apply for the scholarship.

Participation in the competition begins as a junior, when students take the Preliminary SAT, which is the standard National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. From this semifinalist placement, the boys must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. Each semifinalist will also submit a final application, with the assistance of a school official.

The National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring of 2012. Roughly 8,300 scholarships worth nearly $35 million will be awarded.
