City to discount building fees

At their regular meeting on Thursday, March 3, the De Soto City Council agreed to move forward with plans to discount building permit fees in an effort to encourage residential development in De Soto.

The council outlined what they would like to see in a one-year discount plan. Their suggestions will be formulated into an official city ordinance to be adopted at the March 17 council meeting.

According to the proposed plan, for the first six months the ordinance is in place, all fees except the sewer development fee ($3,000) and the city's costs to install a water meter ($750) would be waived. For a single family home with 1,800 square feet of space and a 576 square-foot garage, this would equal a 59 percent discount. After six months, the fees would be discounted 50 percent, equaling 34 percent savings.

Builders would be required to begin construction within 45 days of the permit being issued and must complete construction of the unit within one year of the permit date. The discounts would only be available to those planning to build on currently approved plats of land and the building would have to hook-up to either city water or sewer.
