Mother pleads guilty to child abuse, aggravated endangerment

Rachel Perez, the De Soto woman charged with locking her 6-year-old son in the attic of her home, pleaded guilty to charges of child abuse and aggravated child endangerment before Johnson County District Judge Peter Ruddick on Friday, March 18. Perez also pleaded no contest to a third charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Perez's son was discovered emaciated and covered in feces in the unfinished attic of her De Soto home by Johnson County Sheriff's deputies on Aug. 17, 2010. It is unknown how long the boy had been confined to the attic but a pediatrician testified during Perez's preliminary hearing that the boy would not have survived another 24 hours in the same conditions.

The boy is recovering well and is now in foster care, along with his two sisters and brother, who was born after Perez was arrested.

Perez is scheduled to return to court for sentencing at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, May 26.
