The De Soto Baptist church had a guest speaker filling the pulpit while the Rev. Richard Copeland was on vacation. Her name was Jo Sweat, and she also sang a solo titled "The Christian Prayer", which received lots of applause. Her sermon title was "Powerful Words and Thoughts," which challenged each one attending to live a Christian life and to serve God.

The congregation oat the Baptist church Sunday was led in singing by Rick Walker, Karen Wall played the piano and Lana McPherson was at the organ. Danny and Linda Lane were ushers and Jean Epperson shared the joys and concerns and Dean Wall gave the offertory prayer.

I gave an invitation to the congregation to help the school children in the community purchase school supplies. The FCE group of Johnson County is asking for help with providing school supplies after the Salvation Army published an article asking for help. We think the local community may need help as well. We are asking people to bring school supplies to my house or to Reta Jenks house and we will deliver them to agencies. I saw on a calendar where the city of De Soto is going to have the fireworks display on Aug. 21 at Riverfest Park.

Those having birthdays this week are: Brenda Crisco; Whitney Walker; Sandra Hoover; Walter Johnston; Alyssa King; Brad Rains; Logan Miller; Dick Beytein; Gwendy Olivarez; Tim Weese; Virgie Opdycke; Larry Stephans and my grandson, Brad Williams.

Those having anniversaries are: Troy and Jana Calkins; John and Loyd Lou Perry and Bill and Winnie Braden.

I had two very wonderful great-granddaughters this week in Oklahoma. Hannah and Grace Frohling, Michael and Linda's granddaughters, sent me a jar of beet pickles. They are very good. My nephew and his wife, Steve and Patsy Freeman, from Springfield, Mo., send a package with an embroidered tea towel that has an apple and an orange on it. He says he reads a lot of books and she makes crafts and fancy works.

My son Carlin, who lives in Illinois, copies these "Neighbors" news notes on his computer and sends them to me each week. I hope my great-grandson, Hayden, will learn to do it. Hayden's ball team lost Saturday, but he hit a homerun and made the first run for his team.

This is a busy week at the Baptist church. On Monday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m. the group of Doers of the Word Bible study and prayer group met in the Fellowship Hall.

My leg is somewhat improved, it's still swelling and I have to wear the compression stockings until the swelling stops. I went to the eye doctor this week and he said no improvements on my right eye and it's still seeing blurry.

We did finally find the cell phone and the garage door opener. The other items are still missing.

This post is written by Dorothy Nalley each week. She spends a great deal of time working on these pieces and I simply transcribe them and post them on this website. When it says "posted by Laura Herring" all that means is I was the one who uploaded the column to the site, not that I wrote it.
