Julia Shields, 15, foreground, and Kendall Haun, 16, both members of De Soto's Pioneer 4-H club, participate in the sheep shearing competition at the Johnson County Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Shields and Haan took champion and reserve champion respectively in the senior class of the competition, in which competitors had 30 minutes to shear and clip their lambs as best they could before showing the lambs. Both girls learned to shear just a couple weeks before the competition. "The hardest part [of shearing a lamb] is getting the neck and head but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it," Shields said.
