The De Soto Explorer's No. 3 story of 2008 was the Sept. 12 tornado skipped through De Soto, causing damage to 23 different sites. Damage was heaviest in the 84th Street and Rik Mar area.

In an eventful year, De Soto opened a new park, was hit by a small but still destructive tornado, helped elect one of its own to the Johnson County Commission and approved a bond issue for a USD 232 School District. This week, The De Soto Explorer starts its annual compilation of its local stories of the year with abridged versions of stories numbers 1 through 5.
