Vernon H. Newell 1920 - 2007
Services for Vernon H. Newell, 87, Valley Falls, were Thursday, Jan. 3, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial with military honors was in Fairview Cemetery northwest of Oskaloosa.
Mr. Newell died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Hospital in Topeka.
He was born Oct. 23, 1920, northeast of Oskaloosa, the son of James C. and Frances Alice Turner Newell.
Mr. Newell served in the U.S. Army during World War II in North Africa and Italy, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
He operated Sunset Drive-in Restaurant in Valley Falls. He also worked at Lawrence Paper Co. and Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. He worked in housing construction and farmed northwest of Oskaloosa.
Mr. Newell was a member of Lakeview Faith Chapel in Holton and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Grahem-Herbers Post 3084.
He married Lena M. Clanin on Jan. 30, 1950, in Oskaloosa. She died Dec. 1, 2004.
Survivors include a son, John Newell, Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Engel, Lawrence, and Joanne Graves, Holton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
