Helen K. Wallace 1916 - 2007
Memorial services for Helen K. Wallace, 91, Topeka, were Saturday, Jan. 5, at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Burial will take place at a later date at De Soto Cemetery.
Mrs. Wallace died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Homestead of Topeka Assisted Living.
She was born Jan. 19, 1916 in Johnson County, east of De Soto, the daughter of Leo S. and Mattie G. Grob Large. She attended Jewett School and graduated from De Soto High School.
After working in Kansas City, Kan., she graduated from the University of Beauty in Kansas City in 1947 and became a licensed beautician.
Mrs. Wallace opened her own beauty shop in De Soto but shortly retired to become a full-time mother. In 1963, she started working for Josten's American Yearbook Company, retiring in 1986.
She was a PTA volunteer, garden club member, election judge and Girl Scout leader. She also was featured in the Topeka Capital Journal as Cook of the Week.
Mrs. Wallace was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Euclid Methodist Church and Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church in North Topeka.
She married William W. Wallace on Jan. 16, 1948, in Independence, Mo., three weeks after they met on a blind date. He died in September 2007.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Walters, Highlands, Texas, and Linda Wallace-Wood, Topeka; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Wagner, Billings, Mont.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles William Wallace, in 1976, and a brother, L. Harvel Large in 1993.
