The De Soto United Methodist Church postponed the youth group’s Bingo Bash because it conflicted with high school musicals at De Soto and Mill Valley high schools. It was rescheduled to from 6 to 9 p.m. March 27 at the church’s Fellowship Hall. Cost to play will be $10 for adults and $5 for children. There will be refreshments for the hungry so come and play. Completing Census important to states growth, prosperity

A special delivery is on its way to every Kansas household. As mandated by our Constitution, the Census Bureau counts every resident in the U.S. every 10 years. This year, the census forms will be mailed to every residence on March 1.

t is said that historians have a special responsibility to bring the dead alive in a way that allows them to speak to the living. Alice Smith Dow came to De Soto with her family before Kansas became a state. In “Childhood Memories” she does an exemplary job of giving the reader the conditions that the early settlers were forced to deal with to build our town.

Letter: County out of line to mandate recycling

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners will soon consider a new proposal from staff about forcing mandatory recycling on the entire county.

The De Soto United Methodist Church will have its annual Bingo Bash from 6 to 9 p.m. March 6. Children can plays games all night at the event for a donation of $5 and adults for $10. Food and drinks will be offered. The event is a fundraiser for the church’s youth group.

Legislation to ban texting while driving nod to common sense

Last week, a bill was reviewed in a Kansas Senate committee that would fine drivers sending or reading a text message up to $500 and sentence them to as much as a month in jail. Meanwhile, a bill introduced in the Kansas House will place a $100 fine on the activity.

Twenty years ago, a single church youth group stared the Super Bowl of Caring with the knowledge some wouldn’t have one bowl of soup. Since then, more than $60 million have been raised to feed the homeless and hungry. The De Soto United Methodist Church Youth Group is collecting canned goods and monetary donations for the De Soto Multi-Service Center food pantry as part of the event
Seasonal driving requires Winter Olympic skills

Driving this past month has helped get us in the mood for next month’s Winter Olympics. First, we slipped, spun and skated around on snow and ice. Then, as the snow retreated to dirty piles, we emulated downhill slalom racers, weaving about the road to avoid potholes.

The De Soto United Methodist Church’s annual Biblical scholars bowl pitting members of the youth group against elders will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. There will also be a soup and salad luncheon immediately after the service.
