Lenexa suspect says he was kidnapped

August 3, 2014

— Authorities say a 27-year-old man charged in the deaths of a man and his stepson in suburban Kansas City told police he killed them after they kidnapped him, according to court documents.

Alexander W. Brune of Lenexa has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the July 9 deaths of 47-year-old Brian Baskind and 79-year-old Clifford Preston. The men were found stabbed inside a Lenexa home.

Prosecutors say Brune, who is jailed on $2 million bond, killed the men during a burglary and attempted robbery.

Brune’s statement to detectives saying he had been kidnapped was in a court affidavit made public this week under a Kansas law that took effect July 1, The Kansas City Star reported. District Judge Sara Welch ordered the release of the affidavit over the objections of defense attorneys.

According to the affidavit, Brune called police that night after being shot in the abdomen. He told police he had been at his Lenexa home the night of the murders when a stranger knocked on his back door, pointed a gun at him and forced him into his work van. Another man in a black Mercedes convertible was parked near the van, he said.

Brune said they drove him to a house and took him into the basement, according to the affidavit. Brune said he saw a large knife and stabbed both men while trying to escape, and that one of the men shot him during the altercation.

The public defender’s office, which is representing Brune, was closed Saturday, according to a phone recording.
