Wrestling camp at Northwest to feature college All-Americans
Local wrestlers will have an opportunity to learn from some of the best grapplers in the nation July 6-9 at the Heart of a Champion camp at Shawnee Mission Northwest.
The camp features a lineup of some of the country’s elite wrestlers who have dominated the NCAA Division I scene in recent years. Among them are 2011 NCAA champion Jordan Oliver, 2011 NCAA runner-up Clayton Foster, 2011 NCAA All-American Jamal Parks, 2010 NCAA All-American Alan Gelogaev, NCAA All-American and 2010 World Team member Obe Blanc, and 2008 NCAA All-American and World Team member Coleman Scott.
All six of the aforementioned wrestlers will act as camp counselors while several current and former members of the Oklahoma State University wrestling team will help out.
The camp’s head clinician will be 2011 NCAA champion Neil Erisman. Erisman was one of the top wrestlers in Kansas as a standout at De Soto High School. He graduated from DHS in 2006.
Sessions will last from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the first day beginning at 9 a.m. to allow for sign-in and registration. The final day will conclude at noon after a mat roll-up.
The camp is open to wrestlers ages 5-18, and cost is $125 per participant. Checks can be made out to the Cougar Kids Wrestling Club and sent to Shawnee Mission Northwest head coach Howard Newcomb at 6729 Haskins, Shawnee, KS 66221.
Email HOCwrestling@gmail.com to obtain registration forms and ask questions about the camp. Although it takes place at Shawnee Mission Northwest, the camp is a non-school sponsored event.
