The first major snow of the winter season has caused school district officials to cancel classes for Monday.

Shawnee Mission USD 512 and De Soto USD 232 schools were closed because of inclement weather.

The National Weather Service placed Johnson County under a winter weather advisory Monday, with snow expected throughout the afternoon and into the night. The National Weather Service predicted accumulation of 3 to 5 inches during the day with another 1 to 3 inches possible overnight.

The advisory was scheduled to remain in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
