De Soto girls place 2nd at state cross country
It was another fun season on the run for the De Soto High School girls cross country team.
The Wildcats were one of the top teams in the Kansas City area throughout the season, and they proved it again at the Class 4A state championships Saturday at Wamego Country Club when they collected a second-place trophy.
Baldwin won the state title with 58 points, De Soto was second with 105 and Concordia finished third with 111.
DHS senior Lacey Erickson closed out her career by leading the Wildcats with a 10th-place individual finish in the four-kilometer race. Her time was 16 minutes. 2.40 seconds. El Dorado senior Molly Milbourn was the state champion in 15:02.67.
Another DHS senior, Beth Reichenberger, also nabbed state medalist honors by placing 17th in 16:20.41.
Senior Ellie Sheridan closed out her solid career with a 30th-place finish in 16:52.79, senior Hannah Jokisch was 44th in 17:18.14, and freshman Rebekah Burgweger rounded out the Wildcats’ first five by placing 51st in 17:28.75.
Also for DHS, junior Jordan Kline placed 56th and sophomore Sarah Churchwell was 95th.
In the boys’ competition, De Soto finished 10th as a team. Baldwin won the state title, Mulvane was second and Hugoton finished third.
Senior Evan Landes of Mulvane was the state champion in the five-kilometer race in 16:08.47.
De Soto sophomore Angel Vasquez led the Wildcats with an eighth-place finish in 17:00.74.
De Soto’s next finisher, junior Philip Kaul, placed 49th in 18:18.30. Sophomore Diego Sanchez was 68th in 18:54.56, sophomore Chad Ollendick was 74th in 19:04.51, and sophomore Adonis Searls placed 81st in 19:21.61.
Senior Ryan Endres placed 84th and senior Jacob Robinson placed 88th.
