The rainy weather has postponed today's gardening project at Starside until April 10.

Cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and other assorted produce will soon be sprouting up in-front of Starside Elementary School.

Starside teachers, student and family members are teaming up to plant a community garden.

On Saturday morning the work will begin to construct six lasagna gardens, said Paula Henderson, school counselor.

Lasagna gardening is a no-dig, no-till organic gardening method that results in rich, fluffy soil with very little work.

The produce from the garden will be donated to the De Soto Multi-Service Center.

Henderson said the school's Earth Keepers, a group that meets after school on Thursday's, will mainly be responsible for the garden's care.

The funds for the community garden were raised by students and some funds will come from the school's Earth Day Garage Sale in April.

"Another cool thing is we purchased a Reel Lawnmower," Henderson said. "It's not an electric motor, it's people powered."

The push mower will be used to keep the garden in tip-top shape.

The school will also work on creating a Monarch way-station and an outdoor learning room later this spring.

The way-station will be made of plants that monarch butterflies feed on while migrating to and from Mexico.

"We are killing the plants that monarchs need as they pass through." she said. "So what we are going to do is replant a big area of grasses that butterflies need to live."

The outdoor learning room will be made of sunflowers, planted in the shape of the state of Kansas.

"It will be a real good way for kids to see little plants turning into big plants," she said.

The community garden planting event beings at 10 a.m. at Starside Elementary, 35400 W. 91st Street.
