March 12, 2010

Two outstanding teachers were honored this week in the De Soto School District.

Mize Elementary fourth grade teacher Holly Schreiber was named the districts elementary teacher of the year. Jeff Wieland, Mill Valley High School Advanced Placement US history and consumer economics teacher was named secondary teacher of the year.

Two teachers in the district, one elementary and one secondary, are selected each year as nominees to represent USD 232 in the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. Fellow teachers and community members select the district winners after reviewing applications and essays.

Both Schreiber and Wieland received certificates from the Board of Education for their recognition. They will now enter the state competition to represent USD 232 in the 2011 Kansas Teacher of the Year program.

The district proudly boasts two Kansas Teacher of the Year winners. Keil Hileman, Monticello Trails Middle School history teacher was the 2004 Kansas Teacher of the Year. Jeri Powers, Riverview Elementary reading specialist, was the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year.
