Letter: County out of line to mandate recycling

February 25, 2010

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners will soon consider a new proposal from staff about forcing mandatory recycling on the entire county. This mandatory recycling will come at a cost to each and every De Soto household, so your bill will go up if they pass this new regulation.

De Soto does not use the Johnson County landfill, so this rule should not apply to us but the proposed proposal includes the entire county.

My family recycles our items, for free, at the Starside Elementary School location and the old grocery store location. This is another example of government forcing regulations and fees on citizens when we have free options in our own backyard.

No matter if you recycle or not, this proposal will charge you a monthly fee. If you are tired of being forced with fees and government telling you what you should and shouldn’t do, please come to March 4 De soto City Council meeting. The county will be making its presentation about the proposal to the Council and that will be the time where De Soto can stand up and say “enough is enough.”
