USD 232 announces superintendent
It will be a homecoming of sorts for the new superintendent-elect in De Soto USD 232.
The De Soto of Education announced the hiring of Douglas Sumner, current assistant superintendent of Gardner-Edgerton USD 231, as superintendent-elect effective August 1, 2010. Sumner will begin as superintendent in the district on July 1, 2011. His contract will run until June 30, 2013.
Sumner served as associate principal at De Soto High School from 1995 to 1998. He then served as principal of Monticello Trails Middle School before accepting a position with Gardner-Edgerton as the human resources director in 2004. In 2008, Sumner took the assistant superintendent position in USD 231.
Before coming to USD 232 in 1995, Sumner worked as assistant principal at Shawnee Heights Senior High School in Tecumseh, Kan., for one year.
Sumner graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science in middle and secondary education. He received a masters in education policy and completed 17 of 36 hours toward a Masters in education curriculum and instruction from Kansas University. Sumner received his Doctorate in educational leadership from Baker University in 2008.
Sumner's selection concludes a process that included 25 applicants.
The district used feedback from more than 300 patron, teacher and community member surveys.
Among the responses, patrons felt a superintendent needed prior experience as a teacher and administrator, the ability to listen and communicate with teachers, students, parents and patrons, as well as, being a visionary and innovative leader.
The board plans for Sumner to work as superintendent-elect, beside Ron Wimmer, USD 232 interim superintendent, for the 2010-11 school year. Wimmer replaced Sharon Zoellner, who resigned in spring 2009 to become superintendent of the Louisburg USD 416.
