Monday’s storm kept fire crews busy
Monday’s storm is being blamed for an early morning barn fire near De Soto.
Around 7:45 a.m., fire fighters from the North West Consolidated Fire District and Johnson County Fire District #1 were dispatched to a home in the 11000 block of Gardner Road in Olathe. Fire department officials said smoke could be seen from at least two miles away. When the units arrived they saw a 10x30 foot barn fully engulfed in flames. The fire fighters began defensive operations and by 8:30 the fire was deemed under control, although officials said it continued to smolder.
Preliminary investigations has determined the probable cause of the fire as a lighting strike. The resident recalled a close lighting strike just before seeing smoke coming from the barn, officials said.
By the time medical units arrived, the driver was out of the vehicle and sitting in a Johnson County Sheriff’s vehicle. The man was treated for minor injuries, but he refused further treatment.
