Letter to the Editor: Share holiday spirit

October 29, 2009

Soon, we'll be surrounded by billboards, TV commercials and songs urging into the "holiday spirit." Many of us will wonder what — apart from carols, food, gifts, glitz, overspending and planning frenzies — that spirit is all about?

For those of faith, the holidays are a time for renewing spiritual underpinnings. But for everyone, the holiday spirit is about sharing abundance. Whether we're affluent people without a care or people of modest means, the holidays can make us mindful of the richness of daily life. And the holiday spirit means gratefully sharing that with others.

The De Soto Multi-Service Center, a part of the Johnson County Human Services Department, is a helping agency with the mission to provide a safety net for the community’s most vulnerable. We serve those who struggle year-round to provide basics for themselves and their families. The basics include food, medical care, shelter and utilities. This year, with so many families and individuals affected by the nation's current economic situation, we are again asking for your help to provide holiday assistance and general assistance to those who are struggling.

We think we do that extremely well, but only because so many others work with us to make it happen. Truly, it is community members' generosity that allows us to provide holiday assistance to those in need. As well, we work cooperatively with other agencies to ensure that our efforts are not duplicated and that precious resources are being responsibly distributed and received in.

We are asking you to prove some basic items to brighten the holidays for low-income families, older adults and people with disabilities. We need:

• Turkeys and hams for food baskets.

• Monetary donations for year-round emergency assistance for basic needs.

• Gift cards for groceries.

• Sponsorships of a child(ren) and their family for the holiday.

Contact the De Soto Multi-Service Center at (913) 583-1152 or e-mail me at if you can help or have questions.

Your help and generosity is greatly appreciated.
