DHS volleyball season ends at sub-state
The De Soto volleyball team couldn’t quite pull off the upset Saturday at sub-state in Spring Hill.
The Wildcats entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed and met No. 2 seed Paola, a team De Soto beat earlier in the season. But Paola swept De Soto (18-25, 20-25) in the first round, and the Wildcats’ season came to an early end.
“Paola’s a great team,” coach Jenny Barnhart said. “They did a great job keeping us off balance with their tough serves because we had trouble getting an offense going.”
De Soto started slow in the first set and fell behind 11-1 before rallying late. And in the second set De Soto led 19-18 late in the contest but couldn’t put it away.
“It’s a little bittersweet,” Barnhart said. “I wish we could have capitalized on that win and even pushed it to the third game because who would have known what would have been the outcome had we even just given ourselves an opportunity in the first round against Paola if we would have pushed it to three? But we didn’t get the job done.”
Paola and Ottawa met in the finals, and Paola swept the Cyclones to earn a trip to this weekend’s state tournament.
De Soto finishes the season with a 12-23 record. De Soto started the year strong before fading a bit late. Seniors Tami Crow, Jess Dailey and Liz Valenzuela played their last volleyball games at De Soto, and Barnhart said their work ethic and leadership was evident throughout their four years.
Next season De Soto will return several players who played varsity this year, including Brittany Brewer, Danielle Dowdy, Becca Maasen, Laura Lambert, Katie Gorman, Jesse Spencer and Hilary Schmidt.
