Mize principal moving to new elementary
The De Soto USD 232 Board of Education announced Monday the appointment of Pam Hargrove as principal of Belmont Elementary.
Hargrove is currently the principal at Mize Elementary school in Shawnee.
Belmont, the district’s seventh elementary school, is set to open in the fall of 2010.
The board also approved the resignation of Jan McKinley from Prairie Ridge Elementary School. McKinley will finish her contract with the district, but will not return next fall.
Also at Monday’s meeting the board:
• Discussed a timeline for additional advanced placement and pre-advanced placement courses in the district.
Cindy Fouraker, director of grants and programs, said the district currently has two AP courses at Mill Valley High School and five at De Soto High School, well below the number in surrounding districts. On average other Johnson County school district offer 15 courses.
Fouraker revealed a timeline that would add AP course gradually for the next three years.
The board also discussed the merits of weighted grading for the AP courses as an incentive for students to take the tougher classes.
Fouraker said the AP classes are beneficial to students.
“AP classes help student do better in college and some allow students to earn college credit,” she said.
Decisions on the implementation of additional courses will have to be made by this December if they are to be offered next fall, Fouraker said.
• Approved the sale of $27 million in bonds for the construction of Mill Valley High School and Belmont High School. The sale would also include some construction for De Soto High School if the board approves construction plans in the future.
