Board approves boundary lines for new elementary
The De Soto USD 232 Board of Education unanimously approved Tuesday the recommended boundary lines for the district’s seventh elementary school, near 58th and Belmont Streets in Shawnee.
The boundary changes take effect for the 2010- 2011 school year.
The board approved the boundaries as recommended by a volunteer boundary committee. The committee was created in January to prepare the lines for the new elementary, set to open in August 2010.
The boundary changes affect Horizon and Mize Elementary schools. Jack Deyoe, district director of operations, said attendance lines for the new elementary schools would be comprised of that area west of Kansas Highway 7 Highway with a northern boundary of the Kansas River, and a southern boundary to follow 67th Street west to Mize Road and west at approximately 66th Street from Mize Road to the Kansas River along the northern boundaries of the White Eagle Estates and the Bittersweet Bluffs plats.
The eastern boundary of Mize’s attendance line will shift from Clare Road to K-7. The northern boundary will follow 67th Street west to Mize Road, and approximately 66th Street from Mize Road to the Kansas River along the northern boundaries of the White Eagle Estates and the Bittersweet Bluffs plat. The southern and western boundaries for Mize attendance would not change.
The west boundary of Horizon elementary will shift from Clare Road to K-7 Highway. The southern, eastern and northern boundaries for Horizon elementary would be unchanged.
The board also gave approval of voluntary early transfer for those families living west of K-7 who would be changing from Horizon to Mize with the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
Deyoe said the moves would be necessary to alleviate overcrowding at Horizon for the 2009-2010 school year.
With the approval, notice will be sent to families affected by the changes to ask that intention-to-transfer forms be sent to the principals of Mize or Horizon so that information would be available for personnel and supplies adjustment for 2009-2010.
