Riverfest passes test with Commerce Concert
Last week, we urged residents to accept the De Soto Chamber of Commerce’s invitation to attend Saturday’s Country Concert at Riverfest Park. We hope that many of our readers did.
It was only the second event at the park, but it is clear Riverfest is a wonderful concert venue. The sloping ground in front the stage provides exactly what its designer Doug Pickert said it would, a natural amphitheater that provides excellent seating for crowds anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000. The vendor row along the perimeter sidewalk frames the seating in manner that recalls stadiums.
The threat of rain hurt attendance but the storms earlier in the day allowed Riverfest Park to pass a test. Despite downpours earlier in the week and rains the day of the concert, there were no adverse effects to be noticed at the venue.
Those who passed on the chance to attend the chamber concert because of the real threat of rain or who missed the opening blues and barbecue last October, will get another chance on the Fourth of July to enjoy the park. Thanks to the efforts of City Clerk Lana McPherson, the holiday will be an evening of food, music and fireworks at the park. Again we would encourage residents to attend the city-sponsored event so that they can see the park with a crowd and understand how it is transformed into something special when it fills with people.
