De Soto 4-H’ers show off projects in advance of fair

Surrounded by her fellow Pioneer 4-H Club members and their families, Gabrielle Mallozzi softly spoke of her Johnson County Fair cooking project. The 10-year-old De Soto girl will take orange cranberry muffins to the fair. Gabrielle has a lot to live up to, having won a top-purple ribbon a year ago for her poppy seed muffins. Her father, Guy Mallozzi, said this year’s effort was competitive.

Our backyard sometimes resembles a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock film. Remember “The Birds” from 1963? The movie featured Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Tippi Hedren. In the movie, gangs of suicidal birds wreak havoc on Bodega Bay, a small coastal town north of San Francisco.

It’s still summer, but the De Soto United Methodist Church Fall Festival committee will meet after worship Sunday in the church parlor. Those who would like to have food, craft or other items in the festival or would like to help with the event should inform one of the committee members.
USD 232 mill levy to remain steady

The De Soto USD 232 Board of Education voted unanimously to approve publishing and hearing notice for the 2009-2010 budget at Monday’s meeting that basically leaves the mill levy unchanged.
