Girls drop two at Tonganoxie Invitational
Wins are starting to become a rarity for the De Soto girls basketball team. The girls squad went 0-2 at the Tonganoxie Invitational.
De Soto struggled shooting in the two games, and coach Dwight Spencer said the lack of shooting also hurt the team on defense.
“We’ve got to play better defense,” Spencer said. “We can’t let our shooting effect our defense. Part of it against Tonganoxie was turnovers. And if you don’t get shots, you can’t make them.”
De Soto led briefly in the first quarter, but went scoreless in the second period against the Chieftains, and ultimately lost, 53-27. Tonganoxie’s Roni Grizzle led all scorers with 18 points.
“Overall as a team we’ve got to play better. And we have to help better because she’s so strong,” Spencer said of Grizzle.
Shelbi Petty led the Wildcats with six points against Tonganoxie, and Katie Williams and Tami Crow added four for De Soto.
Against Jeff West in the second game of the tournament, nearly half of the Wildcats’ field goal attempts were three-pointers, but only three went in. The Wildcats hung close but lost, 50-40. De Soto didn’t connect from three until Petty sank one in the third quarter. Despite dropping both games, Spencer said he was pleased with the effort the team gave, even though he would have like to have seen more points on the scoreboard.
“Really, we hit cold spells and when we do it’s not good,” Spencer said. “We need to somehow find a way to consistently score. We just can’t get shutout in quarters. We have to at least put two points up and that’ll keep us in games more. And also when you are scoring, that will make your defense a little easier to play, so it would help us at both ends.”
Petty led De Soto with 11 points against Jeff West, Crow and Williams each had nine. Kelsey Fisher scored four, Jordin Burford had three, and Katie Gorman and Amber Laudick had two.
De Soto was scheduled to play the seventh-place game against Don Bosco last Saturday, but Don Bosco did not make the trip. Officials are trying to schedule a makeup game at De Soto.
Tuesday the girls played Tonganoxie at home and lost 50-37. Next up for the Wildcats is a home match against Louisburg Feb. 3.
