The De Soto United Methodist Church Cantata was Sunday during worship and beautifully done. There was a reception for the choir after service. The church will offer a new middle and high school trivia Sunday school class at 9 a.m.

The De Soto United Methodist Church will have its usual Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. and add a 9 p.m. service. The church’s New Year’s Eve party will be from 7 a.m. to midnight Dec. 31. Those attending the family event are asked to bring 2 liter bottles of soda or appetizer and favorite games.

The De Soto Baptist Church had it cantata, candle-light service and Christmas offering Sunday evening. Many talented singers filled the choir and performances were outstanding. There was also a group presenting instrumental selections before the cantata with Danny Lane running the sound system and Lori Murdock loaning a projector.

Donnie and Sue Allen had a family Christmas party Saturday in their home. Their daughter Kim Proch from Colorado was there as well as Susie from Lawrence and Mike. Kim went home Monday.

Among those celebrating birthdays this week are Alfred Clay, Raymond Tripkos, Ernestine Tripkos, Madeleine Mikinski, Mary Plummer, Nikki Stumpft, Darlene Hackworth, Megan Martinez, Jenna Hodges, Macey Voorhies, Bob Redick, Faula Jones and Margaret Wycoff, who will celebrate her 90th birthday Saturday and lives with her daughter Judy Haven in Camden Point, Mo.

Couples having anniversaries this week include Gil and Linda Rumsey and Steve and Penney Buehler.

The need at the De Soto Multi-Service Center this week is for winter coats, gloves and other warm clothing. The food pantry needs are canned tuna or chicken.

A.C. Haulmark needs our prayers, as does Josh Childers, who is still recovering from recent heart surgery. Ginger Gambino, Cassie Shultz, Donna Bodine and Mary Jo McDaniel’s great neice need our prayers. Willetta Lawhead is scheduled to be admitted to the hospital Dec. 29 for health problems. Vicki Hallmark’s son-in-law has colon cancer and will have surgery.

My neice Sondra Bigley of Joplin, Mo., is recovering from a stroke. My son Carlin of Illinois has recovered sufficiently from his recent heart attack to drive with his wife, Nancy, to De Soto for Christmas. My son Michael, however, returned for a two-day hospital stay for complications from his recent heart attack and won’t be here.

The Pleasant Hour Club met Dec. 17 at the De Soto United Methodist Church with Brenda West and May Jo Palm as hostesses of the dessert luncheon. There was no program as the members exchanged secret pal gifts and revealed their secret pals.

They drew names for 2010 secret pals.
