Board to approve mascot, colors for new elementary
The Bulldogs could be newest member of the De Soto School District mascot line-up if the Board of Education approves a recommendation at the Dec. 14 meeting.
Belmont Elementary, the district's seventh elementary school, is slated to open in August of 2010.
The district recognized the importance of students having ownership in their new school, so students at Mize Elementary used an online voting forum to vote on school mascot and colors. A majority of students at Mize will attend Belmont Elementary.
During the month of November students in kindergarten through fifth grade used the online voting system as an educational tool.
Computer teacher, Maureen Baker, used the system to help students research mascots and colors in making their choices.
On Nov. 30, the voting was closed with 1,112 suggestions made. Students were able to vote more than once on their choice of mascot and colors.
The Mize Elementary site council then discussed the choices and made a final recommendation.
The council, comprised of current Mize principal and future Belmont principal Pam Hargorve, along with Robyn Harmon, Cary Smith, Jennifer Mead, Sue Andrews and Lori Bradley, chose the student's choice of Bulldogs.
However, the school colors vote did not show a clear choice among students. The council came to the unanimous decision of purple and gold to pay tribute to Woodsonia Elementary.
The Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at the District Administrative Offices at 35200 W. 91st Street, De Soto.
