Shelbi Petty hit seven three-pointers and scored 28 points to help lead De Soto to a 56-22 season-opening victory against Maranatha Thursday at De Soto.

Petty, junior, hit three threes in the first half and four more in the second half. The game was never close, as De Soto’s pressure forced eight Maranatha turnovers in the first quarter. De Soto took advantage and led 22-2 at the end of the first period, and the Wildcats took a 29-6 lead into the half.

With 6-foot post players Ashley and Katie Gorman and 5-foot-10 Katie Williams on the low blocks, De Soto controlled the boards throughout the contest. The three post players combined for 22 points on the night.

De Soto boys 58, Maranatha 29

The De Soto Wildcats made enough runs that it eventually ran away from Maranatha, 58-29, in their season opener Thursday at De Soto.

The Wildcats began the game on a 5-0 run, then went on an 11-4 spurt to start the second quarter, and used a 13-4 run to blow the game open in the third quarter.

De Soto’s scoring bursts were often a result of several blocked shots and steals that led to easy layups. Brandan Philbrook scored 12 points to lead the Wildcats and Aaron Nutterfield added 10 points.
