De Soto district to end school year early
Students in the De Soto School District will enjoy the freedom of summer earlier than expected this year.
On Thursday, the district amended the school calendar to move the final day of school for students to Friday, May 22.
The change is an attempt for the district to cut costs in light of the state’s $33 reduction to base state aid per pupil for the current school year.
Moving up the last day of classes by two and a half days allows the district to save approximately $81,900 in transportation, food & supplies and utility costs.
Although students will finish class before the Memorial Day Weekend, contracted professional staff will continue to work through May 29. The additional days will be spent on professional development.
At the March 30 USD 232 Board of Education meeting, administration was authorized to proceed with the plan to change the last day of the current school year.
