Boys golf ready to tee off
A late-March snow storm prevented the De Soto boys golf team from breaking out its sticks for the first time of the spring season Saturday when its tournament was canceled.
As a result, the team will get things started Thursday when it travels to Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence for a tournament with Free State High School. The junior varsity will also open Thursday at a tournament in Bonner Springs.
Coach Chad Brecheisen said he was eager to get the season started as his team returns several varsity athletes ready to make major contributions this season.
“Obviously last year’s seniors were a big part of the team,” he said. “They will be missed greatly. But at the same time, we have a lot of young talent that can come in and help.”
Charlie Modereger, Alex Crall, Brett Williams and Kevin Brashears all saw varsity time in the spring of 2008.
“I’m expecting all those guys to do some pretty good things,” Brecheisen said. “They’ve all put themselves in positions to do well this year.”
The varsity squad will also feature two newcomers, freshman Mason Wedel and junior Branadan Philbrook.
Both Wedel and Philbrook are coming off strong seasons with the De Soto basketball team.
“Mason is a pretty special athlete,” Brecheisen said. “He played well on the basketball court, and, I think, can do pretty well on the golf course as well.”
