City of De Soto issues boil water advisory

October 28, 2008

A boil water advisory has been issued for the city as a result of a water main break that occurred Tuesday morning. The advisory will continue until further notice.

The advisory applies to that part of De Soto west of Penner Avenue between 83rd and 87th streets and the area west of Lexington Avenue between 87th and 103rd streets. De Soto USD 232's west campus is in the boil water advisory area. Also, chlorine residuals may drop to levels inadequate to protect against bacterial contamination.

There is a leak in the main water line that caused the water system to lose pressure. When a pressure drop occurs, it is possible for contaminants to enter the system.

The break occurred in a water main that serves the west side of De Soto only. The advisory does not apply to any area east of the locations noted in the boil water advisory.

The break has been bypassed so that all customers will continue to receive water; however the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has directed the issuance of this boil water advisory because the lack of water pressure in the main line.

The water break is currently being repaired by the city’s water department. staff and should be back on line by the end of the business day, barring any unforeseen difficulties.
