Starside Elementary School running club has another successful season
80 De Soto students participated
Starside Elementary School’s running club has completed another successful seasons.
Toni Cook, Starside physical education teacher, said the club had 80 members in its fall season, which was completed with Oct. 11. The club met at 7:55 a.m. twice a week to run to the high school stadium, circle the track and back to Starside.
“We don’t have to sell it,” she said. “They just join because they enjoy running.”
Cook said Starside students might get involved because they see De Soto High School cross country team members training during the summer and after school and having success.
“I think they see them out running, and they want to be able to do that,” she said. “There are quite a few are good runners who I’ll be looking to see how they do when they get in high school.”
The club always ends its six-week fall and spring season with a 5K run, Cook said. About 20 club members, parents and friends participated in the wrap up Jared Coones Memorial 5K Pumpkin Run/Walk Oct. 11 in Olathe, Cook said. Starside fifth-grader Christian Self won in the 10-year-old age group, she said.
