Chamber showcased potential of De Soto Riverfest Park

October 15, 2008

It was difficult this weekend to decide which was more impressive: That the De Soto Chamber of Commerce was able to put on such a well-planned professional event or the new De Soto Riverfest Park that was its home.

The two were such a perfect blend we ultimately decided not to try to pick. It was a great and we think important weekend for De Soto.

We were stopped by a number of individuals who spoke of their plans for future events at Riverfest Park. Whether those come to fruition or not, it is certain that many people from De Soto and nearby communities were introduced to an wonderful new festival venue, which was shown in its best light this weekend because of the chamber’s success at planning the event and the volunteers and donations that made it possible.

One of the things we heard this weekend was, “I can’t believe this is De Soto.” As quality act after quality act performed from the jewel-like stage, that thought came easy to mind, but the volunteers who made it happen were thoroughly De Soto.

The new park was not without its skeptics, but all who were the park Friday and Saturday witnessed its potential to deliver what its supporters hoped — a festival and entertainment venue that can become a destination attraction unique to the area.

It will take innovative thinking and effort to realize that success. The park and the success of the chamber’s weekend event indicate those qualities are not in short supply.
