Johnson County Veterans’ Day celebration Tuesday

The 22nd Annual Johnson County Veterans’ Day observance will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial at Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch Road, Merriam.

The public ceremony salutes all veterans, past and present; commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War; and honors 57 Johnson County soldiers killed or missing in action in the Vietnam War.

Featured speakers will include Annabeth Surbaugh, chairman of the Johnson County Commission, and Lieutenant Colonel F.G. “Duke” Hester.

Hester, a veteran of the Vietnam War, is the mobilization readiness officer for the Kansas Army National Guard. His military service spans more than three decades. His decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

Master of ceremonies will be John Littleton, a veteran from the Vietnam War, who serves as the assistant membership chairman of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 912 in Kansas.
