Local contractor low bidder for Riverfest Park work
It would appear the same local contractor responsible for the first stage of construction of the new De Soto Riverfest Park will also do the second.
Five bids were opened last Thursday for the second stage of construction of the park's $676,000 first phase. The low bidder was R.L. Construction of De Soto, the same contractor awarded the contract for the brush clearing and initial earthwork at the West Bottoms site.
City engineer Mike Brungardt will recommend the De Soto City Council approved Duncan's bid when it meets Thursday.
Duncan's bid for $535,500 was $27,000 less than the engineer's estimate and $64,000 less than the closest bid submitted by Blacktop Paving of De Soto.
"We had pretty tight bids on the low end," Brungardt said. "The low to high was a bit of a spread but I think some of that was with the electrical work."
Duncan's base bid was $13,000 more the the city has in the budget to complete the park's first phase, Brungardt said. There is no contingency fund.
With the land prepped, the final work on Riverfest Park's first phase will include installation of sidewalks, construction of a performance stage, installation of electrical wiring and water lines, completion of gravel roadways and grass seeding.
The park is to be the home of the De Soto Days Festival starting in 2009. Its supporters hope it will become a popular spot for events that attract people to De Soto.
The hope is the park will be ready for the De Soto Chamber of Commerce's Blues and Barbecue and Barbecue Contest scheduled for October.
