USD 232 summer project list short
De Soto USD 232's summer project list is shorter this year, following last summer when the district was preparing two schools to open in fall 2007.
Mize Elementary School will have about $100,000 of work done including painting and parking lot repaving, facilities director Denis Johnson said.
De Soto High School already received new carpet for about $114,000. That will cover the classrooms, media center, office, choir room, band room, and auditorium.
Johnson said the carpet was a sorely needed project.
"It was about 13 years old and it was getting pretty aged," he said. "It wasn't a real good quality product to start with. The product we are going back with we plan to get a 15 to 20 years of it."
The district also spent about $40,000 on new portable bleachers at De Soto High School to handle about 500 more people.
"Some of the games they get pretty good sized crowds," Johnson said. "With graduations, some of the bigger classes coming up, we are going to start getting pretty tight."
Johnson also is busy this summer planning on expansions to Starside and Clear Creek elementary schools. The board approved to fund the projects, which together total $3.5 million, out of capital outlay dollars.
"We are pretty far along on design with those projects," Johnson said. "I am hoping ot have things out to bid in August and take bids to the board in September. I am hoping for late September early October for construction, that way we can go ahead and get the frame done before the winter weather starts."
