After a respite in which temperatures climbed as high as the 60s, winter returned to Kansas with a vengeance Tuesday on a day the state observed its 147th birthday. At midday, snow driven by winds as high as 50 mph created near white-out conditions and made any trip outside miserable. The weather lifted by mid-afternoon with the return of sunshine.

Another round of bad weather is to move into northeast Kansas Thursday, bringing with it the possibility of the most snowfall this season.
