De Soto school unaffected by nationwide beef recall
De Soto USD 232 is not affected by the nationwide recall of beef that was sent largely to schools and fast food chains, district officials said Wednesday.
District community relations director Alvie Cater said the district does not purchase commodity beef, which is what the 143 million pounds of beef from Westland/Hallmark is classified as. About 37 million pounds of that meat went to school-lunch and other public nutrition programs, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Law enforcement is investigating animal abuse at the California facility.
USDA officials have said that they believe the beef probably poses little risk to consumers and that most of it was likely consumed long ago.
