2nd casino night starts Relay’s year
The De Soto Relay For Life committee knows how to follow up on success.
After raising $1,700 last year with mid-winter casino night, committee members are bringing the event back for another year. The event will once again be at De Soto VFW Post 6654, 33725 W. 84th St.
Event coordinator P.J. Smith said doors will open at 6 p.m. and gaming will start one hour later.
In addition to playing for good times, players will be vying for chances at three grand prizes, Smith said. Those are a flat-screen television, GPS device from Garmin and two roundtrip tickets from Southwest Airlines to any destination the airline serves.
Unlike last year, success at the tables will increase the odds of winning the prizes, Smith said.
"The one complaint we heard last year was the gaming didn't count for anything," she said. "The one change we're making is the more tips you have and the end of the night the more chances you have for the grand prizes."
The theme to this year's event will be The Fabulous '50s, Smith said.
"We'll have an Elvis look-alike contest and other other themed prizes," she said.
The De Soto committee got its year started Saturday with a gathering at the De Soto United Methodist Church. This year's De Soto Relay For Life Chairwoman Lori Murdock said the committee would like to have 35 teams at the this year's relay, which will be from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. June 6 and 7 at the De Soto High School stadium. The fundraising goal is $42,000 or $2,000 more than raised last year.
As a precaution, the committee will reserve the De Soto Community Center as an alternate site in case of bad weather. The move saved last year's event when storms visited the area during the night of the relay.
Those wanting to register a team can get applications at Murdock's Cedar Creek Pharmacy, 33490 Lexington Ave., or from the De Soto Relay For Life's Web site, http://events.cancer.org/rfldesotoks, Murdock said. They also can call this year's team recruitment chairwoman, Kim Mattox at (913) 441-0315.
The theme of the 2008 De Soto event will be "Heroes," Murdock said.
"We're leaving it at "Heroes" so people can go in any direction," she said. "It leaves it a little more wide open for campsites."
The other De Soto fundraiser will be the annual golf tournament scheduled for April 19 at Oak Country, Murdock said.
