Flesh and Blood

By John Harvey

Fiction (2007)

Gritty and sometimes difficult to read, this mystery is set in today's England. The main character is a former detective who abandoned his work when he failed to find a missing girl, now assumed dead.

He is a virtual recluse who is making hesitant attempts to develop a relationship with his teenage daughter. His wife is living with another man on a long-term basis. This former detective is recruited to return to the force as a consultant when another young woman is kidnapped in what appears to be a carbon copy of the case left unsolved so many years ago. But the alleged perpetrator was convicted and remains in prison.

A tangled web of intrigue and murder make this a read even jaded mystery-lovers will enjoy.
