Participants are needed for the fourth annual "Cookin' on the Kaw BBQ Contest," a Kansas city Barbeque Society sanctioned BBQ contest sponsored by the De Soto Chamber of Commerce will take place Oct. 12 and 13 at Zimmerman's Kill Creek Farm, 9210 Kill Creek Road, De Soto.
The first 40 entries will be accepted, along with payment and a completed registration form, on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is $225 and includes free power and ice.
Main contest categories include chicken, pork ribs, pork (Boston butt/picnic/whole shoulder) and beef brisket. Special contest categories include people's choice, honey barbecue sauce, chili contest and site decorations.
More than $2,500 in cash prizes will be given away. The grand champion will receive $500. The reserve champion will receive $400.

In addition to the BBQ contest, each team is invited to cook their best chili. There will be a $10 entry fee per team and each team will get five ballots that will be their ticket to allow them to taste all the other entries and vote on their favorite. The chili must be cooked on site and each team must make about two gallons.
For $3, the public will get to taste all the chili they want from 5 to 8 p.m. and vote for their favorite.
Half of the $10 entry frees goes to prize money. The other half goes to Kooker's Kare as well as 100 percent of the $3 fee the public pays.
Kooker's Kare is an organization that provides freshly cooked and non-perishable food to food pantries like the Harvesters Food Network.
