With little room for error, the De Soto High School soccer team was able to edge out its second win of the season with a 2-0 win over rival Eudora Tuesday afternoon.

The Frontier League keeps on changing, but the De Soto girls tennis team remains constant. The squad again beat the league’s other three tennis teams Tuesday, claiming unofficial bragging rights over the league, which recently shrank by four teams. Perhaps that it wasn’t a perfect day does more to describe the De Soto cross country team’s season goals than anything else might. The Wildcats were dazzling in their 2007 season debut. They swept not only both the boys and the girls varsity races, beating prime challenger Baldwin in both events and all other comers, but also tacked on an individual championship, won both junior varsity races and the boys freshman race, just for good measure.

The game was closer, but the result was the same. One year after the De Soto football team opened its season with a shellacking of Frontier League-foe Ottawa, the Wildcats did it again. The next challenge now remains the same, as well. After scoring with ease Friday in a 38-20 victory at Ottawa, De Soto must find a way to carry that momentum into the rest of the season, a task that will start at 7 p.m. Friday as De Soto welcomes Kansas City-Sumner for its home opener.

There were ups and there we downs. In the end, the De Soto volleyball team members said it was just nice to get started. The volleyball squad, the last of De Soto High School’s fall sports to start the season, won two matches and lost one Tuesday in its season-opening home quadrangular.
