De Soto’s first offensive play from scrimmage didn’t by itself display why the Wildcats lost to Eudora Friday night, falling in the game 55-14 and in the playoff race hopelessly out of contention.
Eudora ran over De Soto all night, scoring with an eight-play, 63-yard drive to go up 6-0. The Cats, meanwhile, struggled throughout to move, finishing the first half with just 16 yards total offense.
That first play displayed how the score got so ugly, however, and how exactly the Cats went down in one of their worst defeats of the season.

It was a gimme goal — Zach England hammered home a penalty kick for a 2-1 win — and it might have been exactly what De Soto needed.
England’s late goal gave De Soto the boost it needed to stave off a first-round upset Tuesday at home. Now the Cats hope to take their show on the road and pull an upset of their own.

De Soto assistant cross country coach Chad Brecheisen compared the De Soto-Baldwin girls cross country rivalry to a heavyweight fight.
Baldwin landed a knock-out worthy blow Saturday, grabbing the regional championship from De Soto by a huge margin. It came only a week after the Wildcats laid a blow of their own, breaking Baldwin’s long-standing grip on the league title.

If it’s going to happen, it’ll be because of Cristian Dozier.
So maybe that goes a little overboard — in no way is all the pressure of the De Soto boys cross country team’s dreams on the sophomore.
Dozier, who was second in Saturday’s regional cross country race, is one of De Soto’s three aces, though. If the Cats can hit with all three at the Class 4A state cross country meet in Wamego, they think they’ll be sitting on one heck of a hand.

A No. 8 seed in an eight team tournament always enters with a certain expectation.
That expectation was all the more written in stone Saturday for the De Soto volleyball team, which didn’t just square off against the top team in its sub-state.

For the past several weeks we all have been reading letters from an individual about how bad everything is in De Soto and that the city government, chamber of commerce and De Soto Economic Development Council can do nothing right. This individual is entitled to those opinions, but after weeks of complaining about all the wrongs we do in this town, we have never once heard ideas from him to correct the problem. Instead of complaining, step up and do something about all the problems you say we have.

I think every one of you would agree we live in a highly stressful, go here, go there, do this, do that, society that always wants us to be politically correct. It even is becoming a bit troublesome to carve out time for family and friends, much less some quiet time for yourself. And I mean the real kind of quiet time that comes from putting away the laptop and turning off your iPod and television.

Twenty-seven years ago this June, Ernest Marshall, a young farmer, living four miles northwest of De Soto, while passing through his wheat field noticed some unusually large and vigorous plants. He noticed that the heads of these plants were larger and that they were of a golden color, different from any of the other plants in the field. These heads he gathered until he had a large bouquet. He determined to sow them that fall and see if he could not improve the variety of wheat that he was then raising.
