De Soto coach Darren Erpelding said he couldn’t remember any of the details about the second goal of his team’s blowout victory against Spring Hill nearly two weeks ago.
The details of that roller into the net might escape the coach, but it’s hard to blame him given the unprecedented run his team has been on since he said the season turnaround with that goal.

Plenty of De Soto teams harbor big plans after the fall’s regular season comes to an end.
Those teams are just now finding out where and when they’ll get the opportunity to execute those plans.

The Paola Panthers came to De Soto having lost twice in their first four games, a team already significantly removed from its run to last year’s Class 4A state championship game.
That didn’t change anything for De Soto coach Brad Scott, however. The Wildcats beat the Panthers 33-14 Friday night, and he said for his program, this was a huge win.

At its best Tuesday, the De Soto volleyball team salvaged all but the most vicious of kill attempts. It responded with a steady attack of its own and supplemented that with a strong serving game.
At their best Tuesday, the Cats bounced back from a first-game loss and an ugly start to the second to beat Louisburg, which was celebrating senior night.

When city or economic development officials talk about possible industrial development they usually talk in terms of jobs created. The possible Huhtamaki Americas expansion in De Soto would mean another 100 jobs for the plant, but what really has local officials rubbing their hands is what the expansion would mean for city utilities.

After nine months under wraps as “Project Snow,” a possible expansion of Huhtamaki Americas plant in De Soto came to light during an interim legislative hearing in Topeka last week.
The long-rumored possible project would add a new product line to the De Soto plant.
“It’s the largest economic development in the state right now,” De Soto Mayor Dave Anderson said.

Strategic planning for the De Soto School District might have to wait.
Superintendent Sharon Zoellner said the recent failure of the $70.5 million two-question bond referendum might mean the board should hold off on strategic planning for a bit, Zoellner said.

It would probably be safe to say there is not a Kansas city De Soto’s size not completely surrounded by urban development without a grocery store. Yet that is the position De Soto finds itself with the closing last week of Morses’ Market.

Evidently, my letter The De Soto Explorer recently on Morse Market closing offended one of its readers. Maybe it was poor communication on my part. The reader I assume thought I meant to use the park money to subsidize the store. That wasn’t the case. The gist of the letter was the lack of concern from government and business leaders for the closing of the grocery store and more concern for a river front park.

De Soto USD 232 is headed back to the drawing board.
The De Soto Board of Education voted Monday night to have a special meeting Oct. 30 to discuss how it should manage the district’s growth following the failure of two bond issues totaling $70.5 million last month that would have provided space to address the district’s current growth issues.
