VFW offers flag etiquette

Veteran's Day is Sunday. Guidelines from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for displaying the United States flag are as follows:

  • A flag displayed on a car should be fastened to the right side bumper, antenna or to the window.
  • If displaying a flag on a wall, the blue field should be in the upper left corner, and it should never touch the ground
  • When displaying an all-weather flag outdoors 24 hours a day, there should be a light near it at night so it is not in complete darkness
  • When the flag becomes worn, replace it.

For additional flag etiquette information, visit the VFW Web site at www.vfw.org or contact a local post commander.

Parks and Rec board openings

The De Soto Parks and Recreation Commission is currently searching for candidates to fill its two remaining chairs. The board is governed by a five-member volunteer team that works to provide guidance to the city in an advisory capacity in the development and care of the city's parks and recreational programs. Candidates who have some background or experience in city government, volunteer programs or parks and/or recreation would be helpful.

To view the Park Board Member Packet online, visit the city Web site at www.desotoks.us/pages/pb.htm, or pick up a packet at the front desk at De Soto City Hall.

Anyone who would like to be considered for one of the open chairs is asked to send a letter of interest and background to desotoparkboard@kc.rr.com, or call Doug Dailey at (913) 375-4057.
