DHS graduation Saturday
The 107 members of the De Soto High School class of 2007 will end a busy week Saturday as the school's 87th graduating class.
Ceremonies will take place at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium of the school, 35000 W. 91st St.
As is the school's tradition, the featured speaker will be a member of the school's faculty chosen by the seniors. This year's speaker will be science teacher Scott Sharp.
The ceremony will include speeches from six students chosen through audition after nominations from classmates.
The senior class speakers will be Lauren Burford, Christina Davis, Gabrielle Mullins, Sydney Tenney, Laura Thompson and Sam Wilcox.
Rather than a valedictorian and salutatorian, DHS recognizes its top 10 percent of the graduating class. This year's top 10 percent, in alphabetical order, are Kathryn Beaver, Kathryn Beck, Christina Davis, Austin DeGraeve, Morgan Frehe, Leslie Hodges, Alexandra Prosser and Jordan Smith.
The seniors' academic week concluded Tuesday with the end of finals. On Friday, De Soto High School will provide an 8 a.m. breakfast for seniors and their parents. Following the breakfast will be an awards ceremony in the Little Theatre and graduation practice.
De Soto High School Principal Dave Morford writes in the graduation program that the graduates should apply what they learned the past 13 years to future choices.
"My challenge to you is to use your education to choose wisely, be determined to succeed, develop into a life-long learner and work to accomplish your dreams."
