Steve Hoover said lunchtime at Mize Elementary was particularly chaotic. Watching students at lunch was part of his job last week, as Hoover volunteered for a day at the school as part of the Watch D.O.G.S. program. Mize is one of several schools in De Soto USD 232 to start the Watch D.O.G.S.(Dads Of Great Students) program.

After being presented with a downtown revitalization plan late last year, the De Soto City Council has taken little action on it or its details. To date, the council has signaled its support for the version of the final plan, but council members agreed they should defer formally adopting the plan until a new five-year capital improvement plan and a package of financial incentives are approved.

Kendra Bearden pumped 12 gallons of gasoline into her car Tuesday at Eudora’s KWIK Shop in preparation for her daily commute on Kansas Highway 10 to her job in Lenexa. Reflecting on the $2.88 in state fuel sales tax revenue her purchase contributed for the construction and maintenance of Kansas highways, Bearden said she was doing enough to pay for state highway improvements.

Teamwork building blocks
Lego robotics teaches Starside students lesson in working together
March 22, 2007
Students at Starside Elementary School have joined others in the area competing to build and control a robot made of Lego toys. A Lego robot team started in January for fourth- and fifth-graders at Starside. The class meets from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursdays at the school. The goal of the class is to learn to control the robots using a computer program.
