De Soto auctioneer Rick Stricker recently became the first in the Kansas City area to earn the Benefit Auctioneer Specialist designation awarded by the National Auctioneers Association Education Institute. Stricker attended the class in Seattle, Wash., by the NAA’s education institute.
Boys cap frustrating season with tourney loss

The second quarter of the De Soto boys basketball team’s Friday game against Anderson County didn’t officially end the Cats’ 2006-2007 season — Monday’s 66-38 loss to Kansas City-Piper in the first round of the sub-state tournament took care of that.

Senior night could not possibly have gone any better for the De Soto girls basketball team. The Cats won against Anderson County, looked good doing it and the seniors that have been a major part of the program through the last four seasons got the sendoff they deserved with a 46-19 win.

Planning commission asks Hollingsworth to apply again

Rick Hollingsworth brought his plan for a subdivision on the southwest corner of 91st Street and Waverly Road for the fourth time Tuesday. While the commission did not outright reject the plan, they did ask the developer to return to the next meeting with a plan that would be more in compliance with the city’s comprehensive plan.

Prepared by two work sessions last month on what should be on the city’s next five-year capital improvement list, the De Soto City Council will start its deliberations Thursday for what projects will be funded.
Parents’ Night Out offered

The youth group at De Soto United Methodist Church will have Parents’ Night Out from 6 to 10 p.m. March 9 in the fellowship hall at the church, 8760 Kill Creek Road. The service is open to members of the congregation, community and friends and family. The cost will be donations only. A snack will be provided during the evening.
City’s home average valuation increase lowest in decade

The Johnson County Appraiser released the 2007 home valuation report showing the average market value of a home in De Soto for the first time exceeded $200,000. Despite this milestone, the increase in valuation was less than it had been in the past decade
Starside Elementary School students cite acts of kindness

Starside Elementary students read essays Feb. 22 dedicated to adults who showed them kindness. The essays selected to be read will be sent to the Kindest Kansas Citian competition and the essays that best exemplify the contest will be read at a luncheon this Spring.

After losing a bond question by only 32 votes, the De Soto USD 232 School Board now has to look at how to accommodate the growing student population. Board members held a forum last week to discuss facilities issues.

De Soto voters whittled down the choices to four candidates for the April 3 election for USD 232 Board members. For the at-large seat, the two candidates will be Kevin Straub and Don Clark. Candidates for Position 2 will be Bob Dyche and Jim Thomas.
